8000BC-1551AD
•The coastal plain of Libya was inhabited by Neolithic peoples from as early as 8000 BC
•The Phoenicians were the first to establish trading posts in Libya •After the fall of Carthage the Romans did not occupy immediately Tripolitania •In 647 an army led by Abdullah ibn Saad took Tripoli from the Byzantines definitively •Libya's rule changed often for around 900 years, until the Ottoman admiral Sinan Pasha finally took control of Libya in 1551 |
1551AD-1947AD
•The Karamanlis ruled from 1711 until 1835 mainly in Tripolitania, but had influence in Cyrenaica and Fezzan as well by the mid-18th century.
•After the Italo-Turkish War (1911–1912), Italy simultaneously turned the three regions into colonies •In 1934, Italy adopted the name "Libya" as the official name of the colony •Under the terms of the 1947 peace treaty with the Allies, Italy relinquished all claims to Libya |
